Simple Theme: how to add a slideshow with arrows to product images

As the name suggests, the Simple theme is, undoubtedly, one of the best themes out there for merchants looking for a minimalistic yet persuading design. However, the major flaw of the Simple theme is that it does not come with many customization options out of the box for its product page, especially lacking swiping and arrows for the product images.

In this tutorial I'll teach you step-by-step how to upgrade your Simple theme's product page by adding arrows, infinite loop, thumbnails carousel and much more.

Making a backup of your theme

Before diving into the tutorial make sure you download the theme, so in case you face any issues you can easily revert back.

Getting ready and downloading the code files

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit Code.
  2. After downloading the code files, inside of the downloaded .zip, find the following file:

    product-template.txt

Setting up the product-template.txt file

  1. Open the product-template.txt file and copy all the code in there.
  2. Go back to yout Shopify admin, find the product-template.liquid file in your theme. (please make sure it is exactly product-template.liquid. product.liquid is a different file).
  3. Delete everything in there, paste the code that you copied & save.
  4. That is it! Your slideshow is now working and ready to use.

Customizing your new slideshow to your liking

  1. From your Shopify admin, navigate to Online Store > Themes >Customize.

  2. On the top, from the dropdown options, select product pages > default product.

    Once this page loads, click on product pages on the left.
  3. Inside the Product pages menu you'll find all available options for the Simple Slider.
